Parts-Reflections

Reflections are parts that overlap and play with what we see. Here's some sky and trees reflected in a stream. It is further confusing because we see the rocks at bottom of the stream through the water.

Parts/whole-Spared parts

The lilacs are blooming in my yard and are just spectacular. I brought some cuttings indoors and made several attempts to paint them. I could not do them justice, but I did enjoy the colors. Soooo, I cut them up and made a whole new piece from the parts.

Parts-Sharing

For me, one of the best parts of making art is sharing what I do. My 95 year old step-mother, Mama/Linda, is a huge fan. I often photocopy a bunch of pictures and mail them to her. Here she is. Look at that smile! That's what I'm talking about!

Part/whole-Depends on the view

Sometimes we can look at a part of something and pretty much know what the whole thing looks like. Sometimes, depending on the view, it may not be recognizable.

Parts/Whole-Art mimics our art

One of the best parts of the Berkshire Eagle is, for me, Bizarro's cartoons. Here are a couple of recent ones that reminded me of our postings.

Part/Whole-First blooms

I'm fascinated by my rhododendrons.  They bloom only for a very short time, but they are a gorgeous part of spring. I love seeing their whole process.

The best part of my day is thinking about the prompt and creating something for this blog. Part of my process often includes going outside to take photos. I'm fortunate to live in an incredibly beautiful place.

Part/Whole

Sometimes we can only see part of something. For example:  we can only see part of the sky. On a smaller scale, we can not see a whole person or object at a time. We can see a top, bottom, side, etc., but not the whole thing at once. Today I sat by a stream in the woods. I certainly could only see part of  the whole thing.

Lines-As in defining shapes

In this piece I started by pasting different shapes I cut from labels on the paper in a pleasing arrangement. Then I painted over the whole page with black ink. I then removed all the labels. I used watercolor to fill in the white areas and finally blended oil pastel on top. I allowed myself to relax; I wasn't trying to color within the lines.

When I stopped, I thought that I had enjoyed the sharp edges of the shapes and felt a little sorry that I had blurred them. I took a thick black marker and began to restore the edges. I stopped because I wasn't sure I liked what I had done. Now I'm pondering whether or not to continue lining the edges, use oil pastel to blend them again, or simply move on to another piece. Sometimes, it just doesn't matter. What do you think?

Shapes-Color Choices

I painted this tree cross section and thought it looked a little pale. I then decided to add more colors just for fun. Figuring I've gone this far, I applied  oil pastels to give it more punch. Turns out, I like the original best. What do you think?
